From Underground to Official?

The Cave Rave Debate

The quiet, rugged beauty of Coves Blanques—the white caves perched near Cala San Vicente—might be trading its natural serenity for a different kind of buzz. Following the viral success of several “underground” parties last year, the local council is currently reviewing an official application for an events license that could turn these historic caves into a regulated nightlife venue.

The Sound of Silence (With a Twist)

Last year’s gatherings gained notoriety for their unique “silent rave” format. Rather than massive speaker stacks echoing through the limestone, attendees were given Bluetooth headphones, creating individual “sound bubbles” in the darkness.

While the concept kept noise pollution to a minimum for the neighboring Cala San Vicente, the pitch-black environment combined with high-energy dancing wasn’t without its mishaps. Reports surfaced of several “collisions” in the dark, including one unfortunate raver who had to be evacuated and treated for a broken toe.

High-Flyers and Hikers

Despite the minor injuries, the events have found a dedicated following, particularly among the nautical crowd. Many who moor their boats in the Cala for the weekend found the short trek to the caves to be the perfect nocturnal excursion.

Hugo Schmit, the ex-president of the Mallorca High Flyers Club Association, spoke to Pollensa Now about the atmosphere:

“The event was incredible. The energy was unlike anything else on the island. It went on until 10:00 AM, and by the end, even some early-rising hikers passing by looked like they were tempted to grab a pair of headphones and join in.”

A Controversial Application

However, the move to make these events “official” has raised some eyebrows at the Town Hall. While the promoters’ long-term aims for the site remain under wraps, the details of the license application have caused a stir. Specifically, the request includes provisions for:

  • Alcohol Sales: A standard requirement for such events, but sensitive given the cave’s terrain.
  • Live Animals: An unusual addition to an electronic music license that has sparked curiosity and concern among local environmentalists.

As the council weighs the economic benefits of a new tourist attraction against the safety and environmental impact on Coves Blanques, the community remains divided.
