Plans Advanced for “Camí Verd”: New Pedestrian Priority Zones Set for Pollença Roads

One of our town hall insiders has revealed that plans are now far into development for the initiation of “Camí Verd” (Green Paths), a new infrastructure project aimed at dramatically improving pedestrian safety and connectivity on the main arteries leading into our local centers

The initiative will target the primary country roads connecting the surrounding countryside to the towns of Pollença and Port de Pollença.

The One-Meter Priority Zone

The mechanics of the project are straightforward but highly visible. The town hall plans to paint a continuous green line along the asphalt, exactly one meter in from the edge of the road.

This designated one-meter-wide strip will serve as an official walking zone, explicitly demarcated for pedestrians. To ensure maximum clarity and reinforce that this space is given as priority for foot traffic, a distinct pedestrian logo will be stamped directly onto the green zone at regular intervals of every 20 meters. The physical presence of the line and repeating logos is intended to act as a strong visual cue for motorists, creating a heightened sense of awareness regarding foot traffic and forcing a natural reduction in driving speeds along these rural routes.

Driven by Campaigning and Safety Needs

According to our town hall contact, the momentum to finally push this initiative through has been building from two distinct angles: economics and safety.

A significant driving force behind the project has been the persistent campaigning of the local expat-led association, “NoWT” (Nothing Without Tourists)” The group has long argued that a lack of safe walking infrastructure actively suppresses the economic potential of the area’s rural holiday rentals. By establishing clear, safe pedestrian links, a far higher volume of countryside properties can officially be categorized as being “within walking distance to the town.” NoWT emphasizes that this shift will directly boost tourist revenue for local villas, subsequently increasing overall economic spending within the town’s shops and restaurants.

This commercial push, coupled with a series of unfortunate roadside accidents involving pedestrians over recent seasons, has finally pushed the town hall to act. With the blueprints now entering their final stages, the initiative looks set to get underway in the coming months.
